You have definitely heard about about John Chow, the master of all evil. He started his blog about making money not a year ago and already makes more than 10,000 US$ a month by selling ads, links and reviews on his website. Though this month, after being penalized by google, it might be hard for him.

One of his so-called genious inventions is his review bait. You write about his blog and link “make money online” to a specific url - in return johnchow.com backlinks your website. But there’s a hook - John Chow received this way more than 800 backlinks to his website - all were full posts about his website, some of them really, really long ones. All you get back, is a link within a 10-item-list, one of many. OK it is a pagerank 6 backlink or whatever, but the times are changing and pagerank is not any longer the most important thing in search engine optimization (seo).

and they certainly don’t like the link baits like make money online by John Chow. That’s way he was kicked out of the SERPs.

Why? It’s easy. Those guys at goole labs ain’t stupid. They want to give us the best results. Link baits try to influence those results in a bad way.

And you see what happened to John Chow. He got banned. Even if you google his name, you can’t find johnchow.com. Google’s revenge. :-)

And if the guys at google think John Chow is the root of all evil what will they think of the links John Chow gave back to those guys that helped him. How will they value them?
google doesn’t want to drop that brick again. So participating in a link bait won’t help you in the future if the link you get back is only a pure link and nothing else. You need links that are embedded in content that is related to the content of your own website. Content relevance is the key.

So that is how it works. A link from a website with content like your own is valued. A link among others without relating content is not.
